Quote of the Day: Rising Food Costs

August 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment

“It takes three things to be well nourished: knowledge, money and time,”

“If you have three out of three, you have no problem. If you have two out of three, you can manage. So if money drops out, you can use your knowledge and time to find and cook affordable, nutrient-rich food. If you have no time, then knowledge and money will tide you over. You can buy (nutritious) takeout.

“The problem is when you are zero for three, you are a recession basket case.”

I started  buying organic milk every time.

I don’t even compare the price to regular milk.

I just grab it and go.

Smackdown: The Solar Panel People vs. The Tree People

January 27, 2008 · 6 Comments

I file this one under the “can’t we all get along category” because I find the conflict vaguely, if not completely, absurd.

The scene: two neighbors, one with eight large redwood trees and another with solar panels. The conflict? Predictably, the redwood trees cast a shadow on the solar panels, causing the panels to produce less energy. The solution? Cut down the trees, of course. Apparently there is actually a CA law that grants priority to solar panels when there is a conflict of interest. Why? Because solar panels are better for the planet than trees, you dummies!

Kurt Newick, who sells solar panels and weighed in on the artical I read, sees it this way:

“I’m a big tree fan. They increase property values and provide shade and cooling. But it’s actually better for the environment to put solar on your roof than to plant a tree,” said Newick, “On average, a tree only sequesters 14 pounds of carbon dioxide a year and a solar electric system offsets that every two or three days.”

Yeah, but… they’re trees?

Am I the only one who is hung up on the green and growing part?

clean and green?

January 14, 2008 · 1 Comment

Clorox has launched a new line of cleaning products that are supposed to be a little better for the environment (and for people) than their traditional line. It seems pretty legit, in the sense that they are trying to do what everyone is trying to do: create products that appeal to environmentally conscious consumers without compromising good function. Plant based oils, biodegradable, etc. It is where the market is going right now. They even managed to score an endorsement from the Sierra Club.

I’m definitely not convinced that any cleaning chemical can be considered environmentally friendly, but I’m open to the idea that some are truly better than others. That said, I’m getting pretty tired of brand name companies slapping a “green” label on their products just to increase their profit margin. Though I appreciate anyone’s efforts to do things a little better, I’d rather buy cleaning products from a company that takes a more holistic approach to environmental issues than one that produces a line to fill a market niche. Especially one that deliberately markets its bleach as the industry standard for cleanliness and purity in the home. Ew, you know?
