“This subsidized (ethanol) program — paid for by taxpayer dollars — has contributed to pain at the cash register, at the dining room table, and a devastating food crisis throughout the world,” said McCain, in a statement.
I am struck by the fact that while Senator Clinton is spurning economists and threatening Middle Eastern countries, Senator McCain is actually talking good sense. Subsidizing ethanol does drive up food prices (and beer prices!) and, while people can live without their gas guzzling SUVs, they cannot live without food. Far from being a sustainable source of alternative energy, ethanol allows the affluent to keep their irresponsible fuel usage while challenging the most basic needs of the poor. The answer is to use less fossil fuel, not to burn potentially nutritious calories while sitting in traffic.
